The Hand of Orula/ La Mano de Orula- Ceremonia de inicio en la Santeria

The Hand of Orula is a ceremony of Ifa practiced by members of the Yoruba religion. When initiating into the religion this is the first step and the first ceremony that the person will undergo. This ceremony has a duration of 3 days in which 4 Babalawo, and a female santera are needed, the Babalawo are the high priests of the religion.

Intention of this ceremony

There are various reasons as to why this ceremony is mandatory for anyone initiating into the religion. Not only is the foundation of your spiritual journey determined here, but many questions regarding yourself and your destiny are unraveled. By consulting with Ifa the Babalawo will determine your destiny as shown on the Ikines, which are the 16 seeds used to consult with Ifa. During this ceremony your guardian angel will be determined, the term guardian angel is referring to which orisha will be your primary guardian throughout your life, santeros sometimes refer to these guardians as their father and mother of the religion. During this process you will receive Orula along with the warriors, Los Guerreros, which are Eleggua, Ogun, Ochosi, and Osun. This ceremony is the first threshold you will pass when entering the world of Santeria and will mark a sensation of rebirth as you will now go through life with the guidance of the orishas.

The process

The first day consists of preparing and cleansing all the materials that the person being initiated will receive, A cleanse is done using various herbs to ask for the blessing of our ancestors. Then we will give birth to the persons orishas through a sacrificial ritual, and finally the person being initiated will use the same herbal cleanse water used on their materials to do a personal cleanse of their own body.

The second day is mostly a day to relax, meditate, and self reflect. It is a day where the person being initiated will be left alone to relax and to clear the mind. On this day a ceremony with Ori is done. Ori refers to one's spiritual intuition and destiny. It is the reflective spark of human consciousness embedded into the human essence, and therefore is often personified as an Orisha in its own right. Through this ceremony the spirituality of a person begins to grow.

The last day of the ceremony consists of consulting with Orula. The individual will drink Saraeko which is prepared with corn, agua ardiente(an alcoholic drink), milk, honey, a bit of cascarilla, and other ingredients. This drink is done to purify the individual before commencing the consultation. While consulting with Orula the individual’s guardian angel will be determined along with various advice that will help the individual throughout his or her lifetime. After the consultation the individual will be cleansed and later on handed their elekes and their Idde.  

The ceremony to receive the hand of Orula is something that needs complete and utter determination and respect, the person who wants to initiate will be starting a whole new life as a santero so the utmost respect and faith is required when going through this ceremony.

La Mano de Orula es una ceremonia de Ifa practicada por miembros de la religión Yoruba. Al iniciarse en la religión, este es el primer paso y la primera ceremonia a la que se someterá la persona. Esta ceremonia tiene una duración de 3 días y se necesitan 4 Babalawo y una santera que va a actuar como madrina, los Babalawo son los sumos sacerdotes de la religión.

Aquí no solo se determina la base de su viaje espiritual, sino que se desentrañan muchas preguntas sobre usted y su destino. Consultando con Ifa el Babalawo determinará su destino como se muestra en los Ikines, que son las 16 semillas que se utilizan para consultar con Ifa. Durante esta ceremonia se determinará su ángel de la guarda, el término ángel de la guarda se refiere a qué orisha será su guardián principal a lo largo de su vida, los santeros a veces se refieren a estos guardianes como su padre y madre de la religión. Durante este proceso recibirás a Orula junto con los guerreros, Los Guerreros, que son Eleggua, Ogun, Ochosi y Osun. El proceso

El primer día consiste en preparar y limpiar todos los materiales que recibirá la persona iniciada, se realiza una limpieza utilizando diversas hierbas para pedir la bendición de nuestros antepasados. Luego daremos a luz a las personas orishas a través de un ritual de sacrificio, y finalmente la persona iniciada usará la misma agua de limpieza a base de hierbas que se usa en sus materiales para hacer una limpieza personal de su propio cuerpo.
El segundo día es principalmente un día para relajarse, meditar y reflexionar. Es un día en el que la persona iniciada se quedará sola para relajarse y aclarar la mente. En este día se realiza una ceremonia con Ori. Ori se refiere a la intuición espiritual y al destino de uno. Es la chispa reflexiva de la conciencia humana incrustada en la esencia humana y, por lo tanto, a menudo se personifica como un Orisha por derecho propio. Mediante esta ceremonia comienza a crecer la espiritualidad de una persona.
El último día de la ceremonia consiste en consultar con Orula. El individuo beberá Saraeko que se prepara con maíz, agua ardiente (bebida alcohólica), leche, miel, un poco de cascarilla y otros ingredientes. Esta bebida se realiza para depurar al individuo antes de iniciar la consulta. Al consultar con Orula, se determinará el ángel de la guarda del individuo junto con varios consejos que ayudarán al individuo a lo largo de su vida. Después de la consulta, el individuo será limpiado y luego entregado sus elekes y su Idde.
La ceremonia para recibir la mano de Orula es algo que necesita total y absoluta determinación y respeto, la persona que quiera iniciarse estará comenzando una nueva vida como santero por lo que se requiere el mayor respeto y fe al pasar por esta ceremonia.
